Senate Committee Approves Anti-Bullying Bill by Senator Baker Bill protects Florida students
Tallahassee, FL—The Senate Education Pre-K-12 Committee today unanimously approved legislation by Senator Carey Baker (R-Eustis) protecting students from bullying in Florida schools.
Senate Bill 790 prohibits acts of bullying and harassment of any public K-12 student or employee. It requires school districts to adopt policies protecting students and school employees from the physical and psychological harm of bullying and harassment. The adopted policy must afford all students the same protection regardless of their status, but districts are permitted to establish separate antidiscrimination policies that address categories of students.
The committee heard testimony from a family whose son had experienced severe bullying, as well as child psychology experts and others supporting Senator Baker’s legislation.
“It is a sad but true fact that because of bullying, many students in our state go to school in fear every day,” said Senator Baker. “Florida’s schools be should safe havens where our children can learn without the danger of physical or psychological harm. This bill will give students the protection they need to focus on their education without distraction or fear.”
